Samsung To Auction Off Gold-Plated 78” Curved UHD TV At Christie’s For Charity

Samsung Curved UHD TV Gold Plated 1

Tis’ the season to be jolly or get wrapped in gold. Samsung decided to take the wrap in gold route and rolled out a 78” Curved UHD TV with its back painted in gold-lacquer. All for a good cause though. Electronic consumer giant have teamed up with Christie’s to sell it during the Hong Kong autumn auction to benefit Orbis, a global non-governmental organization (NGO) that work to improve access to eye-quality eye health.

Gold wrapping was done by South Korean Ottchil artist Sung Yong Hong. Ottchil is an ancient Korean lacquer painting art form that dates back to Neolithic era. Hong is an expert in applying this traditional technique to modern materials. Executive Vice President and Head of Sales & Marketing for Visual Display Business at Samsung, KK Park said “The Samsung Curved UHD TV is an artistic creation, but this collaboration with Sung Yong Hong elevates it to a true work of art,”

The theme behind Hong’s artistic work on the back panel is “Memory of TV”. It has brought to life famous characters and iconic scenes from TV. Some have already questioned the wisdom of buying this TV because of the speed modern technology become obsolete. There is only one thing buyer need to consider – this is for a good cause.

“We are always looking for distinct premium pieces, and Samsung has truly delivered with its one-of-a-kind artisan Curved UHD TV. The design is breathtaking, and we are excited to present such a unique product – our first-ever home electronics product for auction – to our valued guests and clients.” said Eric Chang, Deputy Chairman of Christie’s Asia.

This one-off gold-plated Curved UHD TV will be on display at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center, West Wing Hall, beginning November 20. All proceeds from the auction of the TV will go to Orbis, I presume minus Christie’s commission.
