Garage Italia Customs, owned by designer Lapo Elkann, who by the way is the brother of Fiat boss John Elkann teamed up with BMW i division to create special editions to celebrate the Memphis Design Group. The design group founded in 1981 by Ettore Sottsass made a name for itself by designing postmodern furniture, ceramic and glass objects with influences from Art Deco and Pop Art. However, the Memphis Design Group disbanded after 10 years in 1991.

Lapo has worked with BMW i team on a previous project as well, so he is clearly pleased to work with them again. “Creativity, style, and innovation have always been the key features of all the work carried out by my team in the field of planning and the study of design. This collaboration has given me the opportunity to celebrate my great passion for the Memphis artists,” said Lapo Elkann adding, “I have been collecting significant works of art from this movement for quite a while and they surround me and inspire me in my everyday life. I can’t help but be proud of the result achieved by my creative hub.”

For the project, Lapo and BMW invited one of the original members of Memphis Group to join them, and Michele De Lucchi was more than happy accommodate that invite. The result of their work is on display for all to see. The two cars feature flamboyant patterns, bright colors, crisscrossing lines and sharp contrasts. Interiors of both cars feature ample Alcantara and carbon fiber also in bright colors. The color combinations look a lot like a promotion for United Colors of Benetton.
