An iconic – car, movie, actor. Buick Phaeton. Casablanca. Humphrey Bogart – great story, kid. The 1940 Buick Phaeton, Humphrey Bogart drove in the classic 1943 movie Casablanca is up for auction. This is just one of 230 limited edition Buick Model 81C trunkback Convertible Phaetons built in 1940. The car is part of the movie memorabilia auction due to be held in New York on November 25 by Bonhams’, billed “What Dreams Are Made Of: A Century Of Movie Magic.”
For a car that was on service until 1970, it has only 42,000 miles. Aztec Brown car has an 8 cylinder engine and a 3 speed manual transmission. Mechanical restoration work was done in the 1990’s with new wiring, tires with side mounts and standard shift in the steering wheel. The car was featured in another of Bogart classics, High Sierra.
Bonhams note “This car looms large in the final act of Casablanca. And the film’s immortal final moments between Rick and Ilsa take place next to the car.”
In use at Warner Brothers Studios until 1970, its ownership changed several times until June 1995, when it was sold for $211,500. According to current owner, car is in driving condition. The car this time has an estimate of $450,000 – $500,000 from the auction house.
