Japanese jeweler, Ginza Tanaka knows how to goldify anything including the Godzilla. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Star Wars movies, the company gave the intergalactic villain Darth Vader a gold makeover. They unveiled the Ginza Tanaka Darth Vader Mask last week in Tokyo to announce the sale date – not surprisingly they chose May the 4th. A diehard Star Wars fan with means is expected to part with ¥154 million (about $1.4 million) to be the proud owner of this gold mask.
The life-size Darth Vader mask measures 26.5cm x 30cm, but you can’t wear it at all. According to Ginza Tanaka’s spokesperson, it is way too heavy. Shelve those Star Wars game plans you already made, you are going to need help to carry it to the house, let alone wear it – in all, there are about 33-pounds of 24-karat gold.
This is a big year, not just for Star Wars franchise but for Ginza Tanaka as well. The jewelry company is celebrating their 125th anniversary. This gold mask is a big celebration of both well-known names. That million dollar price tag has priced out almost all the diehard Darth Vader and Star Wars fans. But no worries Ginza Tanaka offers other more affordable items as well. There is a commemorative solid gold coin that costs $11,000. A limited edition of 77 sets, it includes coins and a replica poster. The number 77 celebrates the year the first Star Wars movie debuted – 1977. There is also a10-gram gold coins priced $1,200 – one version features Yoda and the other a lightsaber battle between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. There is something for most Star Wars fans budget.
