For those of you unaware of the story between luxury bed-maker Savoir and the Savoy Hotel, London here’s some history – they go way back – all the way to 1905. After Savoy’s 1904 expansion, owner Rupert D’Oyly Carte decided to furnish rooms with custom-made luxury beds unique to Savoy Hotel, to do that he created the Savoy Bed company. Its first collection, named Savoy Bed No. 1 was designed especially for Savoy, a second collection named Savoy Bed No.2 was created for other hotels owned by Savoy Group at the time and included Claridge’s and The Berkeley.
The hotel owned Savoy Beds until its sale in 1997, and the name change to Savoir Bed happened after the sale. Now located in Park Royal in northwest London, the company has expanded beyond the UK to other parts of the world. They have showrooms in Germany, France, Sweden, China and New York.
Savoir has unveiled a couple of new ultra-luxury beds last week – named Max 01 and Harlech 12. Designed by Savoir’s Creative Director, Mandeep Dillon, the beds feature grand headboards and upholstery in rich horsehair fabrics and plush velvet.
The bed is upholstered in a rich red woven horse hair fabric by John Boyd, and adopts a linear silhouette with a sumptuous, deep box spring. As the UK’s biggest importer, Savoir is well-known for its use of traditional horse hair in both its mattresses, toppers and even box springs. With this in mind, the use of John Boyd’s ‘Paso’ horse hair fabric is particularly poignant, as we take the interesting journey from Argentina to London, with the horse hair eventually gracing each of Savoir’s luxurious designs. The MAX 01 bed can be recreated with the help of Savoir’s showroom teams. A full bedset, as pictured, costs £62,700 ($77,700).
Embracing the Pantone 2017 palette, the new HARLECH 12 bed features a grand headboard upholstered in plush Donghia velvet in a lush green shade which provides the perfect complementary background to brighter more vibrant tones, including Pantone’s pale pink shade for 2017, Pale Dogwood. The handcrafted HARLECH 12, oozes luxury with the tactile velvet headboard adorned with brass plated nailing. Every nail is hand placed and nailed a fantastic representation of the endless handcrafted options that Savoir is capable of. Styled with accessories in the tranquil Pale Dogwood tone, the HARLECH 12 draws on years of bed-making expertise, to the produce the ultimate sleeping experience. Visit Savoir for more details.
