Remarkable Pacific Palisades Mansion 102 Ocean Way Bradbury House Lists for $12M

The 102 Ocean Way Bradbury House was built in 1922-23 by Lewis L. Bradbury, Jr., the youngest son of real estate and mining mogul Lewis L. Bradbury Sr., and showcases breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. The Spanish Colonial Revival residence is listed at $12 million by Kelly deLaat and Rachelle Rosten, Executive Directors of the Aaroe Master Trust & Probate Division.

The mansion was designed by famed architect John W. Buyers and crafted of one- to two-foot-thick brick walls created on site with local soil and set on concrete foundations. “ Lumber used in the construction is said to have come from the 4,7000-foot Long Wharf at Potrero Canyon, built by the Southern Pacific Railroad in a bid to make Santa Monica a main deep-water harbor,” according to a news release of the listing.

The Bradbury Residence was the first substantial adobe house designed by John W. Byers and was instrumental in establishing Byers’ reputation as a specialist in the Spanish Colonial Revival style and the modern use of adobe brick.

The property’s unique U-shaped designs came from Bradbury Jr.’s desire for Byers to model the residence after the 16th-Century El Greco House in Toledo, Spain. To continue paying homage to the legendary landmark, there are over at least twenty different styles of California decorative art tile placed in the home’s courtyard, all close replicas to the El Greco House courtyard.

At a $12 million price tag, the Bradbury House includes four legal parcels: the lot the home is on, the adjacent lot with pool, and two vacant lots across the street thus restricting building obstruction to the Pacific Ocean views.

Key interior features include a two-story entry hall, a twelve-foot ceiling living room with a carved oak mantel, and a large kitchen with counters and cabinets in quarter-sawn oak. Worth noting that the home was listed as a historic-cultural monument by the City of Los Angeles in 1994 and the benefit of a Mills Act contract is included in the sale.

The Bradbury Residence, a trust sale, is the latest property handled by the Master Trust & Probate Division, created to meet the unique challenges of trust, conservatorship, and probate sales. View more at Aaroe.
