Sir Richard Branson’s extensive list of luxury boutique hotels are located in all four corners of the world. Even though we say Richard Branson’s, they actually belong to Virgin Group’s Virgin Limited Edition division. The Mahali Mzuri is a luxury safari retreat you can find just north of world famous Maasai Mara National Reserve, located about 150 miles outside of Nairobi, Kenya.
In Swahili, Mahali Mzuri means “beautiful place”, just one glance and you know it indeed is a beautiful place. It is also right in the path of the annual great migration. The camp site consists of 12 permanent tents, which can accommodate 24 adults at any given time. The stylish and luxurious tent suites are made to blend in with its surroundings and designed by borrowing elements of regions traditional architecture.
Two of the 12 tents can also accommodate two additional guests, making them perfect for visitors with kids. All suites are connected by a common walkway and the farthest tent is just a 5 minute walk from the Main Tent. From the private deck of the tent, visitors can enjoy the breathtaking scenery and wildlife without even leaving it. Interiors of tents feature bamboo light fittings, basket-woven lamps and wooden furniture. Other in-room facilities include iPads, a speaker systems, satellite TV and DVD players. For children there are game consoles, books and kites.
There are plenty of activities to do during your stay at Mahali Mzuri. You can start with a trip to Maasai Tribe community, who to this day practice traditional farming methods in the valley. Then there is the walking safari, something not allowed at the great Maasai Mara national Reserve. Night owls, make sure to catch a game drive at night to watch aardvarks and honey badgers. On request they make arrangements for private vehicles and hot air balloon tours.
After spending a day outside your next activity should be relaxing, you can do that at Nasaro. In the local Maa language Nasaro means “relaxation”. Located near the valley floor, it offers treatments such as facials and massages, and its intimate setting is perfect for pampering. At Nasaro they only use ethical skincare products from Africology to rejuvenate your tired skin.
You can end the day having a drink at the bar or enjoy some pan-African cuisine on you private deck. There is also the option to have meals by the infinity pool, communal table or out in the bush.
Giving back to the community is a big part of Virgin Group and Branson, to this end they support the foundation of the conservancy that work to preserve wildlife habitat at the Mara eco-system. They also work with Maasai Tribe, on whose land the Mahali Mzuri is built. To help community generate income and create jobs, they use regionally sourced material and hire local workers.
