The Mont Rochelle in the Western Cape is an old-fashioned country house turned boutique hotel serving the South African wine country. Now owned by Richard Branson’s Virgin Limited Edition, the 22- bedroom and six suite hotel located in the town of Franschhoek is open year-round and offer multitude of amenities, and activities alike for families, couples and singles. Its grounds, a total of about 100 acres of land allows for picnicking on the estate and the vineyard. The wine cellar is also open for guests to visit. The town of Franschhoek has made a name for itself as South Africa’s food and wine capital. The Virgin Group has spent around $3.2 million renovating the hotel after acquiring it last year. The reopened place now has new furnishings, fabrics, and artworks and a nice pool area. There are two-treatment-room spas as well, they provide hammam and treatments by the essential-oils experts Africology. Of the six suites, two largest come with their own plunge pools, they also have picturesque views of Franschhoek Mountains.
Except for upgrades to the place, Virgin Limited Edition has not made any dramatic changes to the Mont Rochelle. They retained the services of the talented chef and its staff, but trained them to be more Virgin than old Mont Rochelle. With just an hour’s drive from Cape Town, the town of Franschhoek as well as Mont Rochelle is located perfectly for a day out or spend the weekend exploring South Africa’s wine country. They also have a program for special offers such as free nights, romance and festive seasons. Kids are very welcome, on request they are ready to organize activities for them.
