Fifth season of Downton Abbey is coming to PBS tonight. So this is a good time to inform shows American fans about changes to Highclere Castle, where the Downton Abbey is filmed. Starting February, Highclere’s gates will be open for visitors for an overnight stay at their newly opened London Lodge. February opening also means the Highclere’s lodge is available for a romantic stay on Valentine’s Day.
Built in 1793, Highclere Castle is no stranger to visitors and tourists. Thanks to Downton Abbey, plenty of Downton-themed tour groups arrive there to see the castle and grounds. Funds from these tours help lessen the financial burden that need to upkeep the castle. Current Earl and Countess of Carnarvon has done lot of work to restore, repair and upgrade the place that included getting a new roof.
Built around 1840, there are few individual lodges on either side of the grand entrance of the property, the London Lodge is one of them. With the help of few professionals, the lodge is restored to provide unique and luxurious accommodation for two. Lodge amenities include TVs, Wi-Fi, mini-fridges, and electric kettles. Its charming sitting room has a Chesneys wood burner, while the bedroom lodge consists of a double bedroom, bathroom and dressing area. This also marks the first instance that visitors can stay overnight at Highclere.
Booking inquiries can be addressed to [email protected] . The London Lodge is available to book for Valentine’s Day (Feb 13th) and special days through Easter. Rates start at £350 (around $540 per night). They also offer special packages to tour the Castle during your stay.
