Bulova, the New York-based mid-ranged luxury watch manufacturer this week unveiled the world’s first-ever watch made with 24-karat pure gold. This watch achieves couple of firsts for the brand – this is the first edition from Joseph Bulova Collection and also mark their entry into high-end luxury watch market. Named the Joseph Bulova Collection First Edition 24 Karat Gold Timepiece, this to me also the first watch with such a long title.
Credit for creating a watch case with pure gold goes to Bulova President Gregory Thumm. He wanted to celebrate company founder Joseph Bulova’s legacy with something exceptional. Thumm said in the press release “The 24-karat gold special edition watch is a true testament to the legacy of Bulova’s founder, Joseph Bulova, and his unwavering dedication to innovation and craftsmanship,”
Making anything with pure gold is no easy task, Bulova managed to achieve this by using an in-house developed patent-pending process to forge harden 999.9 pure 24 karat gold. There is lot of protection for the 40 mm case inside and outside. With a series of bumpers inside, the case is designed to bounce off shocks. Its bezel, case and caseback are secured with light weight yet strong grade-5 titanium components. Its sapphire crystal boasts five layers of anti-reflective coating and water resistant to 100 meters.
Bulova’s first watch to be powered by a Swiss caliber, it uses the COSC-certified Swiss Sellita SW200 automatic movement. The brushed black dial of the watch features black carved in hour markers and white rail track minute indicators. It has a date window at three o’clock. Hour and minute hands are in gold with black and white highlights. The seconds hand is also made from gold.
The strap itself is a unique creation. To allow for comfort and flexibility a combination of alligator skin, a 316L stainless mesh bracelet and microns of black titanium carbide are fitted together with a number of rivets made from titanium.
Limited to just 32 pieces, the first high-end luxury watch from Bulova come with a suggested retail price of $42,000.
