Hermès Debuts A Hybrid Pocket Watch With An Elegant Alligator Strap

Hermès In The Pocket Watch

The unique design of this fused pocket/wrist watch has a history that goes back to 1912. In that year Jacqueline Hermès received a pocket watch with a leather holder from her father, Emile Hermès. Around nine years old at the time and a talented horsewoman, wearing her pocket watch on the wrist kept her from worrying about it while riding. The watch had a leather strap designed to hold it tightly and protect it. Celebrating pocket watch’s 100th year, Hermès has reinvented the watch in 2012 with an updated version named “In The Pocket”.

The luxury brand is reintroducing the “In The Pocket” watch once again, as a 178-piece limited edition. The 40mm rose gold made watch with an alligator strap is designed to function as a pocket watch and a wrist watch. The in-house made automatic movement H1837 has a power reserve of 50 hours and its oscillating weight is decorated with brand’s signature sprinkling of H motif. The ivory colored dial feature large black Arabic numerals and baton-shaped hour and minute hands in gold. The seconds sub-dial at 3 o’clock also feature a small gold hand.

Handcrafted in their La Montre Hermès workshop in Switzerland, the leather strap of the watch is composed of a longer and a shorter section – a plain strap end and a buckle strap end. Each part is made using three layers of leather – top layer decorative alligator, cow leather for sturdiness and Zermatt calfskin lining.

The long process of making this two-part strap include hides getting soaked, pressed and dried for 10 days. They then get cut, sanded, polished with bee’s wax and glued. The buckle strap end houses the pocket watch and the plain strap also passes through it. To make sure two part strap stays together but at the same time separated they are partially sewn using the saddle stitching technique.

The limited edition Hermes “In The Pocket” watch will cost SFr35,000 or about US$38,200.
