HYT Skull Vida

HYT along with L’Epée 1839 and Fiona Krüger are leading the way in design and manufacturing of skull watches and clocks. The trio makes sought-after timepieces and high-end watch collectors gladly pay a premium in a heartbeat to get their hands on one. We, or rather HYT has a new timepiece that already created a lot of buzz around the luxury watchmaking world. Named HYT Skull Vida, the watch has a unique dial with a handcrafted skull made from extinct Siberian woolly mammoth ivory.

The eye-catching off-white dial sucks in all the attention, though no one is to be blamed for skipping on other highly technical details. Carving rare mammoth ivory is time-consuming work, but the master artisans were up to it. The ivory underwent a stabilization process that lasted several months before engravers and other got their hands on them. And the artisans had to be very careful with the ivory, there aren’t any woolly mammoths around to get replacements and the decision to use them for watches has been controversial enough.

The extinct woolly mammals and the plight of other endangered species are not lost on HYT. They hope, the Skull Vida wearers will pause to think that just like for woolly’s our time on Earth is also limited. This fact is highlighted by the expression of the skull. Unlike other watches in the Skull collection, this Vida has round eye sockets, which gives it a mournful look. The two alloy-made bellows located at 6 o’clock gives it a look of a Pharaoh.

HYT Skull Vida

This is a large watch, just like other HYT watches. To wear this one has to have really thick wrists – measures 51mm wide and almost 18mm thick. The large case is made from DLC and Titanium with brushed and micro-blasted finishing. Thanks to its large screw-down, rubber-coated crown and screw-down sapphire case back, it is water resistant up to 50 meters. The large hour markers are on the bezel. As in other HYT watches, the skull-shaped thin capillary tubes works as hour and minute hands. Tubes filled with black and clear liquid assists in reading time – by looking at where the level of black liquid is in relation to the bezel.

The entire system in the Skull Vida is managed by in-house made hand-wound mechanical movement. It offers 65 hours of power reserve and beats at 28,800vph. The movement decorations that include hand-beveled bridges and Côtes de Genève patterns are visible from sapphire crystal case back.
