Maximilian Büsser has a knack to unearth all things alien – from this world or from the outer space. For this year’s edition of Only Watch charity auction, MB&F contribution is a Horological Machine N°8 (HM 8) inspired unique piece with a whimsical drawing created by 15-year-old Cassandra Legendre. The design of the HM8 series itself is based on the cars from the legendary Can-Am racing series that ran from 1966 to 1987. The HM8 Only Watch is made from a combination of white gold, titanium and sapphire crystal.
This is the fourth time MB&F contributing a unique timepiece for the biennial Only Watch auction, which is raising funds to finance research to find a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a genetic disorder characterized by progressive muscle degeneration primarily affecting young boys. For the second time, the auction is heading to Geneva, and Christie’s auction house is tasked with holding the auction for the first time.
The highlight of the HM8 Only Watch is its unique sapphire crystal dial. Among the items, Cassandra drew and MB&F hand engraved to the dial are jelly fish, a toy car, a robot, palm tree, a flying saucer, a TV, a football and even an ice cream cone – everything a child would like to have on any given day. Located at six o’clock is a big smiley face made from white gold. The double-screws holding the smiley face also forms its eyes.
A miniature elephant hand-crafted by Oliver Kuhn, also made from white gold sits on the racing-inspired roll bar between the hours and minutes. The aim is to draw attention to those who suffer from serious illnesses including Duchenne muscular dystrophy and the elephant as an endangered animal who face an uncertain future. It took Kuhn 120 hours of work to complete the detailed miniature elephant with its trunk tucked in and ears pulled back. It also features tiny tusks that measure 0.2mm diameter at their finest point and eyes that measure 0.18mm in diameter.
Housed inside the 18 karat gold and grade 5 titanium made case is a three-dimensional movement from watchmaker Girard-Perregaux. The movement features an automatic battle-axe winding rotor in 22 karat gold with purple PVD. The 250 component movement has a 4Hz balance frequency and 42 hours of power reserve.
A black hand-stitched alligator strap with white gold folding buckle completes the HM8 Only Watch ensemble.
The artist Cassandra Legendre is a classically-trained ballet dancer currently enrolled in Victor Ullate Escuela in Madrid, Spain. Legendre’s first love is ballet, art is also something she is passionate about and spends considerable time drawing. Her drawings are done completely freehand in black felt pen.
This year’s Only Watch edition will take place on Saturday 11 November. The collection of watches up for auction will embark on a world tour, beginning at the Monaco Yacht Show (27–30 September 2017) before traveling through Asia, the Middle East, the United States and finally back to Europe.
