What Octopus Fans Want – A $36,000 MB&F + L’Epée 1839 Octopod Clock

MB&F and L’Epée 1839 Octopod

MB&F + L’Epée 1839 have partnered again for a new timepiece. Their latest unique creation is a table clock named, Octopod. The inspiration for the aquatic timepiece comes from cephalopods, marine chronometers and James Cameron 1989 film the Abyss. Anything named octo, have to have eight of something – here the MB&F + L’Epée 1839 Octopod features an eight-legged stand and a transparent bubble head that offers a full view of the movement.

This is a kinetic sculpture, you can bend and twist its articulated eight legs to adjust their height by unlocking and locking the buttons in each leg. Flexible limbs are a feature they borrowed from the real octopuses and extremely useful when trying to place the Octopod on an uneven surface. The transparent head that houses the movement is attached to an axis the same way a traditional ship chronometer is gimballed to two axis. So, there is a lot of nautical and aquatic influence in Octopod design and mechanism.

The alien/spider Octopod is powered by an all-new L’Epée 1839-made vertical eight-day tourbillon (not-so-tourbillon) movement. The rotating escapement that regulates clock’s precision is attached to Octopod’s minute hand. And it rotates 360º every sixty minutes. From a distance, it looks like the movement is suspended inside the glass bubble. This bit of magic happens because of the innovative transparent glass made baseplate, to make it invisible they applied a film of anti-reflective coating to it.
