Montblanc unveiled their latest watch collection, the Montblanc Heritage Chronometrie as homage to Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama at the SIHH in Geneva. The range consists of several limited edition timepieces that tell the story of Vasco da Gama’s journey from Lisbon to India. The Montblanc Heritage Chronométrie ExoTourbillon Minute Chronograph is the flagship of the Vasco da Gama Limited Editions. This beautifully crafted watch is limited to 60 pieces, as tribute to the 60-man crew of the São Gabriel.
The dial of the ExoTourbillon Minute Vasco da Gama itself is a work of art. Upper part of the dial made of aventurine shows the starry night sky of the southern hemisphere that guided da Gama during his eastward journey. At 12 o’clock is a diamond indicator in the shape of Montblanc logo. Main dial features Rhodium-plated sword-shaped hour and minute hands, and railway track hour/minute markings.
Located off-center at 12 o’clock is the date sub-dial with a guilloché blued flinqué wave pattern decoration and a hand with a curved red tip. This dial design with hand-type date display refers to one of the navigational instruments aboard the São Gabriel, the Star Clock (nocturlabium). There are two silver “filets” sub-dials – one at 8 o’clock shows 60 elapsed seconds and the second at 4 o’clock shows 30 elapsed minutes. The satin-finished lower level of the main dial houses the ExoTourbillion with its Rhodium-plated tourbillon bridge at six o’clock.
The ExoTourbillon Minute Vasco da Gama is powered by the Montblanc Manufacture Calibre MB R230 mechanical movement that offer 50 hours of power reserve and 3 Hz of frequency. The back of the 18 karat white gold case covered in sapphire crystal comes decorated with a sketch of Vasco da Gama’s ship São Gabriel and his signature.
The watch is fitted with a black alligator-skin strap crafted at the Montblanc Pelletteria in Florence with 18 karat white gold pin buckle. The ExoTourbillon Minute Vasco da Gama Limited Edition sell for €45,000 (about $52,000).
