With competition for smartwatch market heating up, traditional watchmakers are trying to find ways to keep up with them. Even though luxury watchmakers cater to a different market segment with completely different price points, impending arrival of the AppleWatch has made them a worried bunch. Richemont Group-owned Montblanc has decided to do something about it and announced the release of the Montblanc e-Strap. An add-on, the e-Strap will be part of their Montblanc Timewalker Urban Speed Collection.
The strap itself is made from high-end leather that Montblanc calls “Extreme Montblanc Leather” with a carbon fiber texture to it. At the bottom of the strap sits the “e” part of the e-Strap. The electronic module offered in two versions – steel and gray steel come coated with DLC (diamond like carbon). The strap will be available for purchase with or without the Timewalker collection, it easily fits with any other watch. The e-Strap measures 40 mm L x 14.2 mm W x 9 mm H.
The electronic module consist of a 0.9 inch monochromatic OLED touchscreen display with a 128×36 pixel resolution. In addition to displaying notifications for calls, texts, emails, social media, calendars and reminders, it is capable of controlling phone’s music player and activating the camera. It also comes with an activity monitor/tracker with a pedometer and accelerometer to measure data that feeds into its iPhone or Android app – possibly its most sought after feature. A Bluetooth 4.0 acts as the go between for the phone and strap.
Powered by a lithium ion battery, e-Strap is capable of operating for five continuous days between charges and comes with a micro-USB charging port. Pictured here is a 43 mm Timewalker Urban Speed Chronograph with an e-Strap attached. Powered by a Swiss ETA Valijoux 7750 automatic movement – this combination carries a €4,690 ($5,640) price tag. The Montblanc e-Strap only will cost just €250 (about $300).
