Panerai’s watch to celebrate Year of the Horse is a work of art. Created as part of the Officine Panerai series that pays tribute to Chinese Zodiac, the new Special Edition is limited to just 100 pieces worldwide. The series had its start in 2009 and this is the sixth watch, previous versions celebrated zodiac years of the Ox, the Tiger, the Rabbit, the Dragon and last year the slithery Snake.
The horse on this watch appears on the hinged cover of the watch that protects the dial, watch itself resembles a pocket watch. The engraving of the horse consists of a complicated three step process. First grooves are made in steel using a specialized tool called a “sparsello”. They are then gets inlaid with threads of gold. Finally, gold threads gets inserted in repeated parallel layers and hammered until they completely fill the engraved outlines. This work is done only by experienced craftsmen because of the special inlaying skills required for the job.
Features of the watch includes the 44 mm brushed stainless steel Luminor case as well as the lever protecting the winding crown, and a mirror inside the protective cover. The OP III caliber automatic movement provides a power reserve of 42 hours and water resistance up-to 50 m. Completing the watch is its soft brown leather strap. As additions watch comes with a spare strap and screwdriver. Its movement carries COSC certification.
