These are good times for the oil industry, in America at least. With a guy in oil industry’s pocket appointed to run the EPA and a big oil CEO running the Secretary of State – only thing Big Oil and oil barons have to worry about is how to spend their new stash. That is other than making huge contributions to GOP Super PACs. Another way is to splash out on this unique Ulysse Nardin North Sea Minute Repeater.

The highlight of the beautiful piece is its gold and champlevé enamel decorations on the dial. It shows an offshore drilling rig in full detail, in gold, hunting for North Sea’s “black gold”. From a lower angle, the raised champlevé rig and rough waves of the black sea offer an impressive view. The extremely detailed rig features everything from its cranes to deck to the helipad to turbine exhaust. The overall look of the stunning dial is enhanced by the dramatic red and dark black skies on each side of the top half – a bit to the gloomy side.

Last December during holidays, Ulysse Nardin unveiled this little beauty – Hourstriker Pin-Up – one of the latest chiming watches they added to the animated Jaquemart dial collection. Now the North Sea Minute Repeater becomes the latest addition to that series. Here, the three 18-karat gold cranes move and sound when the minute repeater is activated indicating the hours, quarter hours and minutes.

The champlevé enamel technique is a difficult art to master. There are only a handful of artisans in the world who can work with this 12th-century technique. The three-step process starts with the engraver drawing and carving the desired design on a gold plate in 3-D form. Then it goes to the enameler, who fills the shapes with different colored enamels. The third and final step involves the engraver bringing the polished dial to life by chiseling away the burned enamel.

The dial also features 18-karat gold hour and minute hands matching the champlevé rigs, and simple black dot indexes. The North Sea Minute Repeater is powered by Ulysse Nardin’s Caliber UN-73 manual winding movement. It offers a 36-hour power reserve, hour and minute function, and minute repeater function along with animated Jaquemarts. Limited to just 18 pieces, the watch comes with a black leather strap with a gold folding buckle. Ulysse Nardin has not yet announced the retail price. There is also a white gold or silver version.
