Vacheron Constantin - Métiers d’Art Mécaniques Ajourées 1

One of the several Vacheron Constantin watches introduced at the SIHH from 2014 collection is Métiers d’Art Mécaniques Ajourées, three openwork watches that are also in-house Grand Feu enameled. Enamel rings are available in colors grey, black and blue, and fitted on top of the caliber.

The watchmaker has chosen their iconic in-house movement, hand-wound Calibre 4400 for openwork (ajourées). It has taken Vacheron craftsmen hundreds of hours to achieve the desired aesthetics and functionalities through their lengthy intricate work. By using a new hand engraving technique Vacheron artisans have carved out parts around the mainplate and bridges to create a sculpture with three-dimensional look. The new technique has ensured the caliber retains its volume and depths, thus achieving the 3-D effect it wished. Not content with an already beautiful caliber, talented artists just by using their burins created arches around curves that resemble ribbed vaults of late 19th century railway stations.

Skeleton Roman numerals located above Grand Feu enameled ring are similar to those found on central clocks in the large railway stations of late 19th century Europe, they perfectly complements the arches engraved on the caliber.

In addition to these three watches, there is also a high-end version of the black enameled watch. This comes with a single circle of 42 baguette-cut diamonds encrusted on the bezel and an additional 12 baguette-cut diamonds set on the clasp of the alligator strap. Each diamond weighs approximately 2.8 karats.

Housed in an 18 karat white gold 40 mm case, the watch features a crown also in 18 karat white gold and a grey dial. Open worked architecture aside, the Caliber 4400SQ manual movement’s technical performance are top notch. It beats at a frequency of 4 Hz, provides a 65-hour power reserve and water resistance to 3 bars. Movement is visible through its sapphire crystal case back. It also comes with Hallmark of Geneva certification. Putting finishing touches to this work of art is its black alligator leather strap with an 18 karat white gold buckle.

Though pricing information is not published, it is expected to be in the range of “you’ll need a fortune to window shop one.”
