Every single fast food giant with a shop in Japan roll out special editions like there is no tomorrow, for this we should all be jealous of their Japanese customers – seriously, we are not! This is especially true during the holiday season. For the umpteenth time, McDonald’s has revived their one of most popular burgers in Japan for a holiday special – the Gurakoro in two limited editions. Apparently, this burger is in circulation for at least 23 years, because according to McDonald’s Japan the burger received its first update since 1993.

The improvements to the burger arrive by way of enhanced flavor in the taste of its sauce and buns. To differentiate between the old and new Gurakoro, the company named the new version as “Cho Gurakoro” or in English “Ultra Gratin Croquette”. The Gurakoro croquette is a fried mashed potato shell filled with macaroni and shrimp cream. One of the things that make a Gurakoro a Gurakoro is its thick egg sauce, the latest update gives it a richer flavor. They have also changed the recipe of the croquette, it now comes with more spice to contrast the mellow sauce.

The bun has also seen a change – fresh cream and butter are now part of the dough. This changed everything – the buns now has more flavor and a light and fluffy texture, which is a perfect companion for the crunchy fried croquette.

The other Gurakoro to receive an update is the Demi Cheese Gurakoro. Its famous cheddar cheese and the demi-glaze sauce will now have a richer flavor to boost the flavors of the spicy croquette. Every burger needs a proper potato sidekick. The McDonald’s Japan is recommending regular French fries along with a “Tomato Cream” seasoning – just like the burgers special seasoning is available for a limited time.

As mentioned earlier these are holiday specials, and they are offered only for a short time. If you want to get your hands on these visit one of McDonald’s Japan stores between December 14 and the first week of January.

For all the trouble McDonald’s Japan as gone to create the special editions, they are not charging an arm and a leg, at least in US$. The Cho Gurakoro has a ¥340 ($2.95) price tag and a Demi Gurakoro will be sold for just ¥370 ($3.20). The special Tomato Cream seasoning will set you back just ¥30 ($ .25 cents).
