We haven’t heard any stories about the world’s most expensive “insert food item” for a while. The wait is over and we now have the Quintessential Grilled Cheese Sandwich that now officially claims the title as the World’s Most Expensive Sandwich, it comes with a $214 price tag. Record maker once again is New York’s Serendipity 3 restaurant, they also hold numerous other records including the world’s most expensive Hot Dog. They are also famous for making the Frrrozen Hot Chocolate.
As one would expect only the best ingredient are used to make the extravagant Quintessential Grilled Cheese Sandwich. In addition to edible 24 karat gold leaf decoration on edges, its gourmet ingredient list include champagne, lobster and truffle oil. Sandwiched between Dom Perignon champagne soaked and white truffle spread two slices of French Pullman bread is a layer of rare Caciocavallo Podolico cheese, which is aged in special caves.
Speaking to Daily Mail, Chef Joe Calderoni said of his luxury masterpiece “We came up with grilled cheese because that’s the ultimate in comfort food. What better way to celebrate that sandwich than with the quintessential version of that sandwich?” He added, “We source the ingredients by looking for the finest and rarest ingredients in the world. And we try to put them together to create an ultimate experience in dining. The bread is baked with Dom Perignon champagne, some white truffle oil with the gold. Then our grass-fed butter infused with white truffles. Then we take caciocavallo cheese – it’s very rare.”
Along with the exceptional sandwich Serendipity 3 also serves a gold leaf decked tomato and lobster bisque which is presented in a baccarat crystal glass. This is not a menu item, you can’t just walk into Serendipity 3 and order it. A Quintessential Grilled Cheese Sandwich order need to be placed 48 hours in advance.
